Whole-Home Renovations & Extensions in Brisbane

Whole-home renovations and extensions planned and delivered as one cohesive project — structural changes, added living space, services and finishes coordinated so the home works as a whole.

The best renovations do more than replace what has become dated. They reconsider how the home connects, how natural light moves through it, and how each space supports everyday living.

AHO Renovations specialises in substantial renovations and extensions where thoughtful planning, structural work and skilled craftsmanship come together. We approach the home as one complete design and building project, creating comfortable, connected and carefully finished living spaces.

One cohesive project

A whole-home renovation involves more than completing several rooms at once. Layout, structure, services, flooring, cabinetry and finishes all have to work together across the entire home.

We coordinate these elements under one organised building program, reducing unnecessary rework and maintaining consistency from the concealed construction through to the final details.

Structural changes

Removing walls, widening openings and reconfiguring rooms can fundamentally improve how a home feels and functions. We coordinate the building work with the design documentation, engineering, certification and approvals it requires.

Particular attention goes to proportions, transitions and how the new work integrates with the existing home — the difference between an opening that feels original to the house and one that looks like something was taken out.

If you are working out what your project will need, start with which approvals a Brisbane renovation actually triggers — planning approval and building approval are two different things, and most owners are told about neither.

Adding living space

When the existing footprint no longer meets your needs, additional space can be created three ways, and they are quite different jobs:

  • Ground-level rear or side extensions. New footings, frame, roof and services, tied back into what is already there.
  • Upper-level additions. A second storey over part or all of the existing house. The existing structure has to be able to carry it.
  • Building beneath an existing highset home. On the highset postwar homes common across Brisbane's north, the roof and the floor above already exist, which usually makes this the most economical floor area you will ever add to that house.

The right approach depends on the property, the existing structure, planning requirements, design priorities and budget. These considerations are worked through before construction begins.

Craftsmanship and considered detail

Substantial renovations often require more than standard installation work. Existing features may need to be preserved, restored or carefully matched, while new details must feel deliberate within the wider home.

Custom joinery, detailed carpentry, flooring transitions, windows, doors, mouldings, finishes and hardware are approached as connected parts of the completed design.

Comfort and performance

A major renovation is an opportunity to improve more than appearance. Insulation, ventilation, glazing, lighting and the relationship between indoor and outdoor areas all contribute to a more comfortable home — and in a Brisbane summer the difference is not subtle.

We consider these opportunities while the building is open and the work can be properly integrated, which is the cheapest it will ever be to do.

An organised building process

Behind every well-finished renovation is a carefully managed program. We coordinate trades, materials, approvals, selections and construction sequencing so skilled work can be completed properly.

You receive clear communication throughout, with upcoming work, key decisions and changes documented as the build progresses.

Living through the renovation

Some projects can be staged around an occupied home, while larger structural renovations may be better suited to temporary relocation. We discuss the practical implications early and plan site access, work zones, temporary facilities and construction sequencing around the approach you choose.
